NIRAS Greenland report vital for important decision in Greenland

The question of a possible aluminium production has sparked a lively debate in Greenland. This spring, the parliament will discuss whether the production is to be considered further. NIRAS Greenland has produced a report about the economic consequences of such a project.

A lot of questions need to be addressed before a decision can be taken regarding a possible aluminium production in Greenland. Henrik Thomasen, project manager in NIRAS Greenland has been the focal point during the preparation of the report: “There are many questions to be asked if the parliament decides to continue with the project. Where should the plant be build? How will it influence areas such as employment, education, housing, infrastructure and welfare?”

He continues: “NIRAS Greenland’s report dives into many of these questions and we have identified a number of the crucial economic consequences on society expected from this project.” NIRAS Greenland has estimated the number of jobs created during the construction phase and when the plant enters operation and analysed the implications for economic policy making.

The project has a very long timeline and can, if continued appropriately, become a significant element in a more self-sustaining economy in Greenland.
